Qualifications
Marian holds an LLB obtained from Victoria University formerly named University of New Zealand. At that time it was a five year full time course as opposed to the current four year LLB course of study.
Originally from
Marian is Polish but was born in Germany and arrived in New Zealand in June 1949 at the age of two and a half years. His family lived in Bulls for eighteen months then Waitotara (his father farming) until 1957 when they moved to Wanganui. Marian moved to Wellington to study in 1965 which is where he started his career in November 1969.
Arrived in Taupo
Marian came to Taupo in November 1970 to work at Le Pine & Co and to take over the practice of Dick Hampson who was retiring and subsequently became senior partner of Le Pine & Co in about 1980.
Marian recalls that in those days there was a lot of subdivision work and he was involved in the sale of all of the lots in the Richmond Heights subdivision as vendor's solicitor.
Started his career
Marian began work at Rainey Collins Armour Boock Solicitors, Wellington in November 1969. He was admitted to the bar in the High Court at Wellington on 27 February 1970 and was capped on 6 May 1970. He had a variety of work but mainly property such as leasing, conveyancing and subdivisions with some Court work.
Work areas
Marian now works in the property leasing, trust and commercial areas.
Memorable moments in the law
Marian has appeared successfully on a preliminary hearing of a murder trial. He has also acted in a successful commercial claim through the High Court for a substantial amount. Another highlight was travelling to Russia to assist with the purchase of a helicopter. Negotiations took place over a week before a final agreement was reached on terms virtually identical to those Marian had originally prepared.
What he enjoys about his work
Marian is passionate about his work. Given the choice of doing anything it would still be the law. He enjoys the logical process of the law which fits with his logical mind. He must have passed on this passion because interestingly 3 of his 5 children have become lawyers. They have done so without any prompting from Marian and despite declaring that they would not do so.
Things which catch his imagination
The All Whites with the Wellington Phoenix a close second. He was a spectator at the All Whites versus Bahrain game, a day he will never forget.
