Qualifications

Nigel gained an LLB (Hons) from the University of Waikato in 1994.

Originally from

Nigel was born in Hamilton but moved to Tauranga at a very early age and completed his early education there.

Came to Taupo

Nigel moved to Taupo in 1996 from Tauranga to take up a position as staff solicitor with a local firm before moving to an in house role at Taupo District Council. 

From there he did his OE based in the UK between 1999 and 2003.  During that time Nigel worked in the Intervention Department of a London firm which involved taking over and administering distressed law firms.  He also had periods working for a local authority and for the Insolvency Service. 

On returning from the UK he worked in Tauranga for a short period then moved to Taupo in 2004 to take up another position with Taupo District Council as in house solicitor for the Environmental Services Division.

Nigel became a partner of Le Pine & Co in July 2011.

Began his career

Nigel started his legal career in 1994 as a Regional Policy Analyst with Federated Farmers of New Zealand Incorporated. This work involved advocating on behalf of the farming sector, particularly in relation to district and regional plans which had been newly drafted following the enactment of the Resource Management Act 1991.  Amongst the practical training received at Federated Farmers was a stint milking cows.

Work areas

Primarily resource management/environmental law and local government law, acting for both local authorities and private clients. Nigel also does Court work in the criminal and traffic areas.

How did he get into these areas?

Nigel started his career in the Resource Management area gaining a good grounding through Federated Farmers and in house local government experience in the late 1990s and 2000s. He has built on that early experience and now runs a busy resource management and local government practice at Le Pine & Co. 

What he enjoys about his work

Environmental law issues are seldom straight forward. They often involve value judgements and challenging perceptions all of which makes for interesting work.

Things which catch his imagination

Boating, fishing, and keeping fit, including playing squash.  Spending time with his two young daughters.
