Background

Terry was born in the Manawatu. His father was in the Air Force and later civil aviation and during Terry's early life the family lived at or near air fields in New Zealand and Fiji.

Terry undertook his secondary education in Whangarei and Auckland and attended Waikato University and the University of Auckland.

He started his legal career in 1993 in Auckland working in litigation, mainly contract, family and employment disputes before moving into a property and commercial role. Terry arrived in Taupo in October 2009.

Work areas

Terry works in the property area, both business and personal. The work  involves setting up and maintaining suitable ownership structures for businesses and for families, and transactions such as buying and selling assets, commercial and private contracts, tax, financing and land law. Further specialist areas are assisting clients meet immigration and Overseas Investment Act requirements.

Legal experience

In 1997 Terry moved into the property and commercial areas when he took up a position at a Nelson firm. Terry undertook further study in the tax area and has continued working in the property and commercial law areas ever since.

During his time in Nelson he developed his immigration and Overseas Investment Act practices which he has continued having completed many successful applications since 1999.

Terry's work relates to a significant extent to land whether that is transferring, subdividing, syndications, leasing or disputes. He also has a lot to do with company and partnership variations, sales and issuing of shares and preparing agreements between owners. He prepares and advises on commercial contracts, puts together deals which work from risk and tax perspectives, deals with personal asset ownership structures such as wills and relationship property issues and financing and lending securities.

Industries he has been involved in include commercial property, rural land, wine, mussel and aquaculture, residential development, retirement villages, motels, overseas investment in New Zealand, immigration.
