Brent Winkelmann

Brent originally began at the University of Auckland in the School of Fine Arts but decided not to take it further, leaving after a year and a half. He became a plant life surveyor around Auckland for the Auckland Regional Authority Forestry Department and also worked as a builder and concrete layer before going back to University and enrolling in Law.

Brent was brought up in Blockhouse Bay in Auckland in the 1960’s and lived in Mt Eden during his early career before moving to Taupō.

In 1985 Brent began work for Russell McVeagh in Auckland as a summer clerk. At the time Russell McVeagh was the premiere law firm in New Zealand. The following year he started full time as a law clerk graduating and being admitted to the bar during this period. His work at this time was in the resource management and litigation areas. Brent left Russell McVeagh and worked in a number of Auckland legal practices in the property development and commercial law areas. He arrived in  Taupō in November 2000 to work at Le Pine & Co. Brent recognised Le Pine & Co as a successful and well respected practice and Taupō as a desirable place to live.

Work areas

Brent has broad experience with a focus on conveyancing both residential and commercial, trust formation and administration and general business work.

Memorable moments in the law

Some of the more memorable work Brent has been involved in has been looking after the leasing in major Auckland retail and commercial developments and working on substantial apartment developments in Auckland during the 1980s and 90s.  Brent acts for the CEO of a Fortune 500 insurance and investment company and for the Global head of markets for the IAOP number one ranked international accounting firm.

One of the more alarming episodes was being phoned by a respected community leader complaining of pressure being placed on him by fellow members of his organisation. Later in the call it became apparent that the pressure was being exerted by men sitting in his front room armed with machetes!

What he enjoys about his work

Brent enjoys meeting people and hearing their stories. Apart from client relationships he enjoys the mechanics of the law, facilitating deals and protecting assets.

Things which catch his imagination

Brent finds people and their diversity inspiring. Practicing in the law gives him the opportunity to meet people and to hear of their stories of endeavour and achievement. Being a keen follower of sport Brent finds inspiration in the achievements of sports men and women, especially those from Taupō.

He has a number of other interests, principally supporting his children’s sport and education.  He has been honorary solicitor for the Taupō Rugby Sub Union and Chairman of Taupō Cricket.
